Grab bars generally come in two types – permanent and removable. Permanent ones usually require drilling, but can be installed anywhere, whereas removable ones often use tension or suction cups to adhere to a flat surface (no cracks, grout, texture), which can limit where they can be placed. Suction cup grab bars will only install in showers that have 4” or larger ceramic tiles, fiberglass shower/tubs, or other completely smooth surfaces. Smaller tile, natural stone, and drywall will NOT allow suction cup grab bars to properly install. Once you have decided on a type of grab bar, here are a few other considerations:
Grab bars range in length from 4” to 48”, the most common being multiples of 12” (ie. 12”, 16”, 24”, and 36”). Diameters range from 1” to 1 ½”. A thinner bar is ideal for those with arthritis or joint pain.
You’ll most likely need more than one grab bar. Installing safety bars at the entry to the shower or tub, in the shower or tub, and near the toilet will help you regain your balance.
Most safety bars can be installed vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. Step in and out of the bath or shower, and sit down on the toilet to see where you can best benefit from a grab bar.
Most grab bars support at least 250 lbs. Bariatric grab bars are available for those who need a larger weight capacity.
A textured surface offers a non-slip grip, especially for wet hands or those with limited dexterity. The Nova Wall-Mounted Grab Bar is knurled to ensure a strong hold.
Bathroom grab bars come in various colors and finishes, so you can match them with your décor. Choosing a color that contrasts with the wall will make the bar easier to see.
