Proper nutrition is important no matter what age you are, and because no two bodies are exactly alike, we all need to eat different things to keep ourselves in good condition. For children, getting enough of the right nutrients is particularly important. As we all know, kids grow like weeds, and therefore it’s important to make sure they get the right kind of food that will let them grow up tall and strong!

But sometimes this is easier said than done. Almost every kid goes through a picky eating phase at some point—they don’t want vegetables, they’ll only eat purple foods, or they’ve vowed to live off cereal. If your child happens to be a finicky foodie, you’ll have to get a little creative to make sure they still get the nutrients they need.

  • Play with your food: One good way to make nutritious food more kid-friendly is the classic cookie-cutter sandwich technique. Take a healthy sandwich—peanut butter and banana, cheddar and tomato, etc.—and use a cookie cutter or knife to cut it into a fun shape. The possibilities are endless—people, dinosaurs, trains, puppy dogs, anything that will make your child smile!
  • Disguise the yucky parts: It’s hardly uncommon for kids to dislike vegetables, but the fact is that they are a great source of nutrients like fiber, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to sneak veggies into your child’s meals, with no one being any the wiser! Try cooking spinach, zucchini, or carrots into lasagna. They’ll absorb the flavor of the sauce and become hardly noticeable underneath all that cheesy goodness. If your child is in a phase where they swear they’ll never touch anything green again, you can even hide vegetables in dessert! Chocolate beet cake and black bean brownies are so delicious, your child will never guess that they’re actually good for him!
  • Get an extra boost: In addition to serving healthy foods in fun forms, make sure your child stays healthy by giving them a daily dose of vitamins. For a picky eater, these can also be difficult to make appealing. No one likes swallowing a pill every day, but luckily, vitamin supplements come in many more appealing forms these days. Bars, drinks, even nutritional gummy bears are all ways for your child to get their daily dose of vitamins without too much drama.

By ensuring that your child gets the proper nutrients they need, you’re setting them up for a strong and healthy life in the future! It might seem far off now, but when they’re all grown up, they’ll thank you for it.
