Insomnia is a sleep disorder in which one has difficulty falling or staying asleep. Insomnia decreases your energy, increases your irritability, and can negatively affect your ability to concentrate or remember things.

Some people try to cure their insomnia with sleeping pills. However, these pills lose effectiveness over time and can become habit-forming. Fortunately, there are many safer natural ways to get a good, restful night's sleep.

  • Stick to a sleep schedule. Sticking to a regular sleep schedule gets your body into a healthy rhythm of knowing when you're tired and when you need to wake up. Experts recommend going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends.
  • Stop using electronics half an hour before bed. Electronics - your phone, tablet, computer, TV, video games, etc. - are incredibly stimulating to your brain, even if they feel relaxing to you. Make sure to stop using them a half hour before you intend to sleep, and switch to more soothing activities such as reading. This will help put your brain in a calm, relaxed state, making it easier to drift off to sleep.
  • Don't drink caffeine after lunch. If you have trouble sleeping, then you definitely don't want to be drinking any tea, coffee, or energy drinks after lunch. It takes caffeine 7 or more hours to get out of your system, depending on your sensitivity. Plus, caffeine increases urine production, causing extra trips to the bathroom in the night and further disturbing your sleep.
  • Avoid alcohol. It's true that alcohol makes you sleepy. But studies show it also keeps people, especially women, from sleeping soundly. Alcohol inhibits the deeper stages of sleep such as REM, leaving you with a night of shallow, less restful sleep.
  • Make your bedroom a place only for sleep and sex. By making your room a place solely for sleeping and sex, you'll train your body to relax whenever you're in the bedroom. Remove all electronics, including the TV and computer, to eliminate distractions. If you have work to do, do it in the living room or home office.
  • Have sex. Having sex is a fun, natural way to get yourself to sleep. It releases oxytocin, a hormone that makes you sleepy. Women produce even more oxytocin than men; however, men also produce another sleep-inducing hormone called prolactin.
  • Exercise! Exercising during the day makes your body physically tired and helps you fall asleep quicker at night. Studies have shown that people who exercise regularly sleep better, have more energy throughout the day, and feel less depressed. However, avoid exercising right before bed, as exercise can raise your body's adrenaline levels and make it harder to fall asleep.

By taking these simple steps, you'll be able to enjoy a good night's sleep. If you have any natural suggestions for curing insomnia, let us know in the comments!
